No matter how healthy you are, at some point you will encounter the confusion that is the health care system. While there are plenty of books tackling the health care system from an academic or political perspective, few consider it from a personal-but-objective viewpoint, and none illustrate its ins and outs with the clever clarity and imaginative humor that The Ninjja Sutra does.

Reading like a narrative, the story follows Ninjja, a woman who believes she benefits from the “always stay fit” genes of her mother, as she begins to experience unexpected health issues. Not wanting to bother with doctors, she tries to find solutions on her own. Meanwhile, her father, who has a weak physical disposition, blindly trusts anyone wearing a white coat and embraces the system with open arms. As destiny forces Ninjja to face the health care system, she begins to see it as a drama played by comical characters, but is surprised to learn how the behind-the-scenes crew plays an even bigger role than the more familiar cast.

Blending comedy with pathos, The Ninjja Sutra exposes the health care ecosystem while offering practical, bite-sized advice on how to use it to your advantage and how make it better, one thing at a time. For more details, visit www.ninjjasutra.com and Fb page www.facebook.com/ninjjasutra

The Ninjja Sutra Surviving the HealthCare Web edition by Neelam Phadke Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

Only last week, my wife visited the Primary Care Physician’s office. She came back mentioning how difficult it is for doctors to provide quality time to patients these days. To those of us who have remembrance of the Doctor Uncle visiting our homes in the days of the past, to those who remember how we would recover from fever without consuming numerous pills, and for those who are therefore struggling to navigate through, as the book title suggests – the Health-Care web, this book is lucid reading at your doorstep.

The book is presented in twelve chapters and in each of these chapters; the author picks up issues, which are of great concern to all of us. Enters Ninjja – the protagonist, who takes us through the maze of hardships, which we encounter, in our healthcare system. A sense of personal experience, which Ninjja is aware of, helps us connect with the challenges. And after recognizing the challenge, the author compiles them into what she calls the receiver’s perspective on the health-care challenges, which are numerous. The moral corruption in the medical profession, the nexus between insurance companies and hospitals, the way pharmaceutical business connives with the medical professionals – all of these are known to us for some time now. So we simply can’t be naïve about them and take whatever is offered on face value. The author takes us through this list and develops the ‘eight fold principles of messed up health care system”

Then what do we do to survive? Ninjja does not leave us stranded. Just as the eighteen chapters of Bhagavad Gita, a new realization dawns on us we go through eighteen ways to manage this crisis. She calls them the Survival Mantra for the patients. The recommendations keep growing as the reader grows through each chapter; till the issues are addressed one by one. And finally, there is a postscript where a list of “golden rules’ are prescribed for the patients. Thus, as readers, we all end up getting immensely educated about the current medical system and the ways to handle unexpected predicaments while dealing with the health of our dear ones.

Another important aspect of the book is reflected in the appendices, where the author identifies the key stakeholders – the patients, the participants in the profit (insurance companies, doctors, pharmaceutical industry, medical suppliers), and the agencies which try to address the gap/challenge which impacts the recipient and the provider of the health services. There are suggested actions for the stakeholders to make the relationship wholesome and productive for all.

One can pick and choose from a gamut of subjects. The pace at which the information is presented, the narration sometimes gives the reader an overload of information – so that takes some fun away from reading. But this is a serious subject – meant to provide as much information as possible to the reader of the messy world of ‘health-care’. And yet – the author’s personality is reflected in the narration. One can clearly see the management consultant in Neelam, when she deploys tables, blocks, pictorials, and fragmentation of a problem to drive home her point. Since the illustrations are all drawn beautifully to compliment her views, one can see a glimpse of an artist in the author.
Overall – this is a great read. It is meant to be an informative read and it succeeds in its objective.

The Ninjja Sutra Surviving the HealthCare Web edition by Neelam Phadke Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Interesting read of a really relevant topic and something with which each one of us identify with. Kudos to the author for doing putting forth the thoughts, emotions, conflicts and the solutions in such a fabulous way by weaving it so well with wit and humor. A special mention for the sketches to illustrate the situation. An enjoyable read that enriches you with a lot of information too. Highly recommended!!!
An interesting, informative and engaging read. It is the story of Ninjja, and her close encounters with the healthcare system. Through these experiences, the author seeks to highlight the pitfalls of the system, and the things one should be aware of to achieve better outcomes. Throughout the narrative, the author also offers insights, analysis and solutions for the problems which plague the system.
Incisive, evocative, empathetic and engrossing narrative that revolves around a topic that relates to each one of us. I was riveted from page one and loved the author's easy going style as she takes you along on her journey .. A must read !
An immensely absorbing and riveting narrative. Deft handling of an expansive subject that affects us all , the book is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the healthcare ecosystem. Through the experiences of Ninjja, the chief protagonist, to which we can all relate, the book provides insight into the complexities of the health care "web" and probes into the possible solutions. Interwoven with wit, humour and emotion this is a compelling read.
This book needed a good editor. It makes many valid points about how to deal with the medical profession; however, most of those points are familiar to any older person who has had dealings with doctors, insurers, hospitals, etc. Maybe younger adults might benefit. But the framework should have been a magazine piece, not a sophomoric attempt at novelizing.
Great book addressing a very real & pertinent topic. The author has handled a very serious & delicate issue in a very responsible way. The story is an emotional roller coaster ride but the author has thrown in a mix of some humor, some positive relationships & outlooks that make the book an enjoyable read. The main character Ninjja is someone who anyone can relate to & her experiences are all too real. The book offers practical advice on how to navigate the health care system that can easily be applied to any culture - small nuggets that can potentially have a big impact on the mental well being of all involved. I would highly recommend the book.
